What Is Neurodiversity?
Neurodiversity is an umbrella term used to explain the consistent ways some brains work differently than others. This includes autism, dyslexia, dyscalculia and ADHD. In a work environment, these neurological differences are often seen in a persons thinking processes, attention, communication, perception, or sensory experiences.
With as many as 15-20% of Australians thought to be neurodivergent (Life Without Barriers 2022), we need to build cultural competence within organisations to work cohesively with neurodivergent people.
Many neurodivergent people feel misunderstood, stigmatised, and socially isolated in the workplace. Working with people who have a low understanding, or misconception, of the neurodivergent experience can be disempowering and exhausting for neurodivergent people.
